Work at Aarhus Vand
Onboarded 2014 as a Systems Administrator, specializing in Microsoft infrastructure and Vmware vCenter, and getting systems in OT better stabilized and in control. Delving into Cisco Meraki along the way was a treat.
Improvements to ITSM and configuration management were ever a topic and introducing some automations to our CMDB and ticketing system for making life easier was very much also a well visited area of work.
Primary tools
As Systems Administrator, the PowerShell console is central, along with the management tool set provided with the Microsoft products, Vmware etc. Azure Portal as well.
Aarhus Vand used a community-driven ITSM, iTop, for rudimentary CMDB and Change Management, as well as a ticketing system for requesting service or support. No central documentations platform were available at the time.
Examples of projects and initiatives
Improve OT maintainability and operations
The servers were running in Workgroup mode and kept manually aligned and updated to begin with. At the time, centralizing control were of no real interest for the owners, worrying it would jeopardize the ability to run things in Island Mode / Isolated Mode.A workaround was building a bit complex system of maintaining payloads through local scripts and scheduled tasks, managed by a central server. When exiting Aarhus Vand, I put in place a new Active Directory and instructions of how to extend this were handed over.
New Citrix environment
The old Citrix environment had grown both out of capacity and out of support, including the Citrix gateways. A completely new setup was done, with NetScaler, local StoreFronts and hosts.Through UI customizations, the number of hosts needed could actually be halved, reducing the cost of the setup dramatically.
Building Support app for making life easier
Building an app in PowerShell, using PowerShell Studio, as just about everything was done manually. The app provided shortcuts to trivial tasks like resetting a password, including sending an SMS, unlocking accounts, log borrowed equipment and pretty much everything oft recurring, that you could fix from a powershell console or do in our ITSM - all logged as completed tasks in ITSM, at the press of a single or few buttons.Also, it was expanded to have short cuts to vital systems, granting you quicker access through the credentials, you logged into the app, eg. RDP to a central jumphost or accessing vCenter.
Demands were, that any service or support request should be logged, so this brought not only some comfort but could also significantly reduce time spent on minor tasks.
Active Directory upgrade
Basic upgrade of the functional levels to current at the time (2016), made complex by a lot of homebrewed code with hard coded links and tie-ins to the domain controllers, as well as the landscape catering to low grade appliances relying on legacy protocols.
Taking over roll out of Cisco Meraki
Moving to a new, temporary HQ, we opted for Cisco Meraki. The initial installation of networking devices were performed by a 3rd party, who setup Wifi as well as part of mapping the optimum AP placement. Taking over the configuration of switches and planning the roll out of needed ports etc., introducing procedures for support to be able to do basic tasks, rudimentary training of suppport personnel etc.

A failing ADFS setup had to be replaced
Introduce a new way of working with systems ownerships
Tech lead on building a new setup of how to address systems ownership. Prior, the business had no real stake or interest in this, but a strong focus on making business stakeholders into systems owners were backed by CEO and we designed and build processes and procedures, tying it together i nphase 1 in Sharepoint Online as management interface for the respective systems owners.
